2023 Ram 3500 + SET Flatbed
AEV Prospector converted to a flatbed. Daily driver now, Hawk-ready when the camper shows up.
Why a flatbed first?
Eduardo brought us his AEV Ram 3500 Prospector for the conversion that a lot of overland customers eventually do: ditch the factory bed and put a Summit Expedition Trucks tray on it. He's planning to drop a Four Wheel Campers Hawk on the back in a couple months, but for the short term he wanted the truck set up as a usable flatbed — daily driver, lumber hauler, gear platform — without committing to a camper-only configuration.
The tray is the standard SET 8.5-foot Full Size base deck, all aluminum, 82 inches wide, with the dual-purpose setup that makes these trays work so well. Drop side gates and a removable rear gate for flatbed duty. A drop-in spare tire carrier for the 37" mounted out back, because the Rams have nowhere to fit a 37 once you go over factory tire size. A 36-inch headboard. Front and rear under-tray toolboxes. A full-size pull-out drawer. Ten interior tie-downs in the deck. A goose neck access cover so Eduardo can still run a factory gooseneck hitch underneath if he adds one later. And a 14-gallon gravity-fed water tank up in the passenger front corner — the kind of setup that's easy to use and impossible to break.
Eduardo decided to keep his factory AEV rear bumper. It costs the build about two inches of tray height (the tray sits taller to clear the bumper, which means the rear toolboxes are smaller than they'd otherwise be), but the bumper looks good and he paid for it as part of the AEV package. Up front, we mounted a pair of Baja Designs LP9 Pros to the AEV front bumper using the AEV low-tube light and accessory mount kit, and wired them in clean. All factory sensors — blind spot, parking, the backup camera, the tail lights — got relocated through SET's wiring package and a Camera Source camera kit. No check engine lights, no warning chimes, no flashing. It operates exactly like factory.
When the Hawk shows up, the side gates and tire rack come off, the camper drops onto the deck, and the truck transitions into camper mode without touching the tray itself. That's the whole point of the SET platform — one chassis, multiple use cases, no compromises in either direction.
